Shelter App, Inc. is an all-volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to assisting homeless and at-risk youth by providing access to essential services through a mobile application. The Shelter App, formerly known as Strapp, offers resources to youth across the United States, as well as specific resources for individuals in Colorado and the following counties and cities: Los Angeles County, King County (Seattle), Multnomah County (Portland), Orange County, San Bernardino County, Riverside County, San Francisco County, Santa Clara County (San Jose), Alameda County (Oakland), San Diego County, and El Paso County.
Shelter App features an AI-powered chatbot that connects at-risk youth to a wide range of services, including youth drop-in centers, homeless and runaway youth shelters, LGBT advocacy and support groups, after-school programs, crisis hotlines, food banks, soup kitchens, transitional housing options, domestic violence shelters, pet shelters, rent/utility assistance programs, affordable housing resources, free or low-cost medical and dental clinics, mental health centers, HIV/STI testing centers, syringe exchange programs, clothing resources, legal clinics, hygiene services, showers, restrooms, support for homeless and low-income families, education and employment assistance services, job training programs, life skills training, mentorship opportunities, and many more essential resources.
Users of the app can easily switch between list view and map view, and have the option to filter services that are currently open using the side menu. Detailed information such as contact details, transit directions, and schedules for each service can be accessed by clicking on the respective service. A flag button on the home screen allows users to connect with the app administrator or service provider when needed. Users can also demonstrate their appreciation by clicking on the kudos button for services they find valuable or mark services as favorites by clicking on the star icon for future reference.
For organizations interested in listing their services or updating shelter availability information, they can sign up in the app to add or manage their services. New details submitted by service providers will undergo an approval process before being published in the app. Users are encouraged to report any outdated information or suggest changes through the "Give Feedback" option in the side menu.
